Raton (actually Raton Pass) was a noteworthy point along the Santa Fe Trail and it became quite the mining center so it actually attracted the railroad to it (as opposed to being created by the railroad like many larger places in Wilfornia. As a result of its long history and prosperity, it has a very cool downtown area and many beautiful turn-of-the-20th century Victorian-style houses that no one can actually afford.
