January 27, 2013 Dear Mama, Howdy doo! It is late because of various circumstances and so this letter may be a little shorter than usual. Jay was able to get last Monday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) off from work. We spent the day together and really enjoyed the time since other things did not interrupt our day. Tuesday he took the day off again because he woke up with a sore throat. He spent the day gargling with warm salt water and by Wednesday morning he felt well enough to go back to work. His mom is really sick with congestion and coughing and he thought for sure he was catching what she has. But so far, he seems to have escaped it. Wednesday I went to Clovis after dropping the boys off to school because I had gotten a call saying my glasses had come in. So, I drive the 90 miles to get there only to discover that only one pair of my glasses had come in. And they were my reading glasses. And when I tried them on, everything was blurry. So I hung around for the doc to come in to double check the prescription. Apparently, someone had made a mistake and put my "far" vision in my reading glasses. So, I got to drive another 90 miles home without any glasses. What a waste of a trip. I mean, Jay was to go to Clovis that morning also but only as far as the Science Research Station. He asked me to stop in on my way home to say "HI"! So, I did. As I drove up, none of the cars looked like his car. So I parked and asked some people standing outside if Jay was there and they said "no". So I went inside and used their phone and called his cell and he said that other things came up and he never got out there but was headed to Raton and would probably overnight there, but he would probably see me at home for lunch before he headed out. --Like I said, a waste of a trip. But that was okay...I got to see Jay before he took off. Thursday, Jay had to cancel Young Men's because he was still out of town and he could not find anyone to go take his place for him. Meanwhile, Josh had a basketball game that night. It was an away game and he had to travel to Floyd which he said took a couple of hours to just travel there. So, by the time he called me to pick him up at the school it was about 10:30 at night. I had hoped they would have dropped him off again, but no, I had to drive out to San Jon. I did so, and they had won their game after going into overtime for another 4 minutes. Anyway, we didn't get home until 11:30 and I was bushed. My body is used to my 8:00 bedtime. I told Josh he would have to get himself up for Seminary in the morning because I was gonna sleep in. I usually get up at 4:30, and I actually slept until 6, but didn't get up until 7 when Brenna and Josh took off for Seminary. (Brenna has graduated from Seminary, but on Friday's she goes with Josh because he is the only student and it is not fun to do scripture chases and such by yourself. This way, he has someone to compete with and play against). Saturday was our day to clean the church again. We've got it down to being able to complete the whole thing in about an hour. Shayna called. She said that she turned in her paper about Plato and they had to read them aloud to the rest of the class. She went first and another guy went after her. Well, they got to arguing and the teacher had them debate it. By the time it was over, the guy was shaking in anger--Shayna had won. Her teacher--"Elder"-- said that that was the best asthetics class he'd ever been in. He asked Shayna if she ever took debate. She told him no and he asked her how she did this debate so amazingly well, and she said, "My father and four years of Seminary". She also said that there was a surprise "white glove" in her apartment. She got a head's up from some guy who already had gone through it. She quickly picked up her room, vacuumed, did the dishes, etc... She was the only one there (all of the other roommates were out of town) and they discovered some alcohol in her roommate's room. There is a fine of $100 for that and they were going to fine ALL of the people in their apartment. Shayna quickly put a stop to that, she told them she was a Mormon, and she doesn't imbibe, so that is a saving grace for her. Anyway, she sounds like she is doing okay although she is super busy. One of our friends, Dennis Currell, had a heart attack this last Wednesday. He seems to be doing okay at the moment, but it was scary there for awhile. His wife, Pat, usually leads the music in church, but is with Dennis in Amarillo, so I subbed for her. Well, that was our week in short. Hope all is well with you, and I am still awaiting your letter with your testimony of your conversion to the church. Hop to it! Here is a joke for you from Josh: There were these two muffins in a hot oven. One muffin says to the other, "Man, it's hot in here." The other muffin said, "Whoa! A talking muffin!" Hahahahaha! Love ya. Your 4th, Lisa
