You remember the moment that you make a decision and know that you can never take it back? It has been discussed a few times earlier. With foresight, you won't make so many regretful choices and can move on with fewer regrets. At least, that is how you hope you will react when the moment arrives.
Hindsight can be painful.
Sadly, so far in his life, Davvor hasn't looked in either direction, forward or backward, long enough to make much of a decision of how he feels about things. He hates fishing, of course, but he never had many better things to do before he dreamed dreams and became the consort of a queen. Whatever ultimate rewards, which is what we are pursuing here, he ends up with will likely meet with the lack of enthusiasm and drive that he has always shown up until now.
That is really a good point to make here - your ultimate fate will not be all that surprising.
Now, the events of our story haven't yet concluded, so there are still things to do, improvements to make, choices to break ourselves upon. Anyone still breathing can still choose destruction or redemption or something in between, so we only are taking snapshots of how things are for some of our characters.
Even as Daavor decides to lounge in the royal bed and enjoy the fun of having Evette slowly and sensually draw information from him, his son Weslyn is putting on the Kiyomai persona that will define his future years. He is more weary of the slow pace of things and really wants to get on with it. There was a certain draw to go with Enis to Waykeep and fulfill his childhood dreams, but he is torn away by the possibility of becoming a person of some stature, which he hasn't a clue where that road will lead.
His boat-mates, the folk who wouldn't bother getting their shoes muddy when the moment came to go ashore, have used up all the food and goodwill available. It is really easy to shout a mantra in a stadium and follow a rather mindless crowd to where it leads, but when the situation requires just a bit of spine, such people turn back and cower from anything expansive. It is only comforting when your crowd reacts the same way you do, huddling like scared children in the bowels of a ship. Although there were a handful of "leaders" at the gunwale, mocking the braver souls moving forward in their lives, they will join the other cowards below decks and be the objects of manipulation soon enough.
Of course, the very promising Mullicynda is now dead, so we can put a final pin into her destiny, unlike the others. For my part, I think she actually did quiet well, making her mark on the improving character of the Convocation, though she didn't have much an effect on her old school-friend who poisoned her. One can read further to see if her example and actions have an effect on others and made a difference. It is hard to know so close to one's life of the influence we have on others, so we can think we know Mulls' impact, but it might take a bit longer than we like to wait.
Rendlyn is practically half-formed, only having had some exposure to the religion of Kiyami through his love/hate sport-fighting relationship with Enis. He was the sort that took very readily to the Convocation and fighter's mock-life, so much so that he forgot that it was all a farce for the entertainment of rather weak minds. I think he wants to be a person more like Enis, but he just has no experience with it and a lack of a life so far that builds resolve. There will be a bit more to say about him and those who ended up following him later on as well.
Something in every story must be a constant and for our purposes, this is obviously Enis. He came with a clear goal that God planted in his mind and he is currently on the cusp of fulfilling it. His recruits have been tested, faced remarkable odds, and proven themselves ready for the physical and emotional rigors of the mountain pass above Waykeep. The man himself is resolute, doing what he commits to do, the very model of a warrior in the pass and a follower of the Christ.
Everyone is providing ample evidence of who they really are at this point. At such a time, it is good to be honest and refrain from deception, being something you are not, as you will end up with a disjointed life, playing a false role badly rather than a fitting authenticity. If you personally feel depressed often, you might consider altering your circumstances to better fit yourself.
God's promise is that our reward will fit us.
