The first chapter (done) is about her husband who had given himself and her to a gang that stocks the local superstore at night in exchange for junk food and goes on forays to enslave women to service the sexual needs of their members.
Of course, she is marked with tattoos that identify her with the gang, but she doesn't run into problems until her husband doesn't come home from "work" with needed supplies. She is rebuffed from the superstore during the day by store security and has to come afterhours and beg from the gang, which roughs her up and eventually takes her to the lingerie department, which is basically a sex assembly line for workers break time. She will get food and supplies as she does a good job here. She takes some clothes for her boy, as she observes some of the men doing, and gets punished for not begging to her dame for the favor, no food for a few nights until she better falls into line.
She comes home to her mother early one morning and her son, which is the only purpose to her life, and finds that her mother signed the kid into residential school for a case of refried beans. When she goes to see her son, she is not permitted at first, but then she earns a visitation pass and realizes he son doesn't want her visits.
Although she shows up for her nightly sex work, her "heart" is no longer in it and she is eventually thrown out into the streets. Her mother barely ackowledges her, aswaging her guilt in binge-watching TV.
She gets a hold of "Z" green beans and discovers "the agent", who leads the local group of christians that give out food without enslavement. She and her mother eventually join the group and learn the food comes from "Zion", which they decide to pursue.
